DERMAL FILLERS AFTER CARE

After treatment it is expected that you will see an improvement immediately however the final result takes some weeks longer to become visible due to the amount of time needed for the new collagen formation to begin. The full result may be judged at around 4-8 weeks. You may be invited to attend a review appointment at 2-3 weeks where the success of the treatment may be assessed and adjustments to your personal treatment plan made, if necessary.

Small red spots on the skin usually disappear in a few hours. Transient stinging of the skin is normal after injection (10-15 minutes). If bruising is to occur, it is usually is apparent at day 2-3 and will typically resolve over 5-10 days.

It is normal to have a degree of swelling and oedema after your treatment, especially if a cannula was used, or if you have had the lips or eyes treated. This usually takes around a week to resolve, however it can take longer than this and it is not unusual to have residual swelling for up to a month. Swelling will usually reach its peak at around 2-3 days post procedure.

Lip filler: if you've had lip filler treatment its normal for the upper lip to be much more swollen than the bottom lip during the healing process.

What to do after treatment

  • Drink plenty of fluids but avoid hot drinks

  • Please do not wear your normal make up for 12 hours with the exception of Oxygenetix, Exuviance or other post surgical make up

  • In the evening of the treatment you may gently wash your face and use your regular wash and lotions

  • You may gently apply a cool compress to any red or swollen areas for the first 48 hours to help decrease the swelling more quickly. No pressure is to be exerted onto the face. The compress should only be gently placed on the treated areas

  • Remain upright either sitting or standing for as long as possible and sleep with 3 pillows at night whilst there is swelling and oedema present. This is especially important when the lip or eye region have been treated as laying down may make any swelling worse. Do not sleep with pressure on the face

  • If you are uncomfortable with the swelling of the lip or around the eyes you make take Piriton (normally used for hayfever) to help decrease this. You may also regularly apply ice or a cold compress to help decrease the swelling more quickly. If there is excessive swelling you may contact the clinic to obtain a prescription for steroids to help resolve your inflammation more quickly; prescriptions drugs are not appropriate if the degree is swelling is within normal parameters. Aside form this, there is unfortunately no quicker way to resolve swelling as it is a normal reaction of your body to trauma

  • You may commence bathing the day after the procedure

  • Wash your face very carefully, applying no pressure to the skin for 2-3 days

  • You may require further treatment to obtain the desired results. You may be offered a follow up appointment for 4 weeks after your initial procedure

  • If your hands have been treated please do not apply any hand cream for 12 hours. You can wash and moisturise with Dermol cream/lotion

  • If you are a smoker it may be recommended that you take vitamin c prior to the procedure to assist with healing.

  • You may require further injection to obtain the desired results. You may be offered a follow up appointment for 2-3 weeks after your initial procedure

What NOT to do after treatment

  • Do not massage the area treated for the first 2 days following treatment. No facials, waxing or massage for the first 2 weeks
